Graduate Degrees for Minorities for Engineering and Science (GEM)

The GEM program at Berkeley Lab is open to GEM fellows at the master’s and doctoral levels. The GEM program specifically recruits African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino, and American Indian/Native students. The GEM program supports these under-represented groups and helps them access more opportunities in science and engineering. The program begins with a summer internship to provide hands-on research experiences at a DOE national laboratory; the initial step in developing early-career hires to support a diverse workforce at Berkeley Lab. The program is sponsored by and managed in partnership with the National GEM Consortium.
Open to MS and Ph.D. level students. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Must be a senior, or graduate of an accredited engineering or computer science program at the time of application. See the main website for full requirements.
